Argireline (acetyl hexapeptide-3) is a unique peptide—a chain of six amino acids—that effectively reduces the degree of existing facial wrinkles, as proven during its development. This solution is a non-toxic, safer, and gentler alternative to botulinum toxin, targeting the same wrinkle formation mechanism, albeit in a very different way.

Muscle contraction is attenuated twice: by blocking ion entry with Leuphasyl, and by modulating the formation of the SNARE complex with Argireline.

Muscles contract when they receive neurotransmitters released by a nerve cell, and botulinum toxin type A paralyzes the muscle by selectively blocking the release of acetylcholine at the neuromuscular junction. BoNTA irreversibly fragments the SNAP-25 protein, preventing the formation of the SNARE complex. Without the SNARE complex, the nerve signal cannot be transmitted, so the muscle cannot contract. Argireline is an analogue of the N-terminal of SNAP-25 and competes with the natural protein for a position in the SNARE complex, destabilizing its formation without breaking any of its components. If the SNARE complex becomes even slightly destabilized, the vesicle is unable to release neurotransmitters. Leuphasyl is a pentapeptide that mimics the natural pathway of enkephalins, acting on the formation of expression wrinkles in a novel way. It is a modified enkephalin that binds to the enkephalin receptor on the external surface of nerve cells.
