Sunbeds in winter: vitamin D and seasonal tiredness

A sunbed is not a treatment for vitamin D deficiency or autumn tiredness. Different devices using light do not necessarily emit the same radiation or serve the same purpose.

Vitamin D: UVA is not UVB

Skin production of vitamin D depends on UVB, not UVA. The NIH vitamin D fact sheet explains the distinction. A tanning label does not establish a machine's exact emission spectrum.

A tan does not tell you your vitamin D level. If deficiency is a concern, seek advice on assessment and correction; buying UV sessions does not replace that healthcare decision.

Seasonal tiredness and light therapy

Light therapy for seasonal affective disorder uses bright light with UV filtered out, according to NIMH. It is not equivalent to a sunbed or any red lamp.

Seek professional assessment if tiredness or low mood persists and affects daily life. Calling it autumn fatigue does not establish its cause or indicate which device to buy.
