Glutathione at high concentration, Vitamin C and Citric Acid act as antioxidants for the skin. Glutathione is also a detoxifier and inhibitor of melanin synthesis, the latter action being synergistic with that of kojic acid.
Glycolic acid is used for its exfoliating effect as it increases the penetration of the other topical agents, while depositing moisturizing agents within the newly exfoliated skin surface. Thus, it reduces the appearance of lines, fine wrinkles and age spots in addition to improving sun-damaged skin.

Skin blemishes due to age, sun exposure or disorders such as melasma have necessitated the development of formulations such as BCN MELANO, which thanks to its five active ingredients, carefully chosen for their depigmenting and antioxidant action, meet the objective of treating these skin alterations and restoring a smooth, even and luminous tone to the skin. These five ingredients are glutathione 600, glycolic acid, kojic acid, vitamin C and citric acid.

Glutathione at a high concentration (600 mg per gram of tissue) together with vitamin C, makes this product a powerful antioxidant for the skin, reducing the damage caused by free radicals that are a harmful by-product of sunlight, smoke and pollution. Glutathione also plays an important role in protecting the cell during aging, acting also as a detoxifying agent and inhibitor of melanin synthesis. This capacity makes it an essential component in the treatment of melasma, which is nothing more than hyperpigmentation of the skin, characterized by the presence of irregular light brown to grayish-brown macules in sun-exposed areas of the face, which can appear as a result of pregnancy, taking anovulatories or in dark-skinned phenotypes.

This last action is enhanced by the presence of kojic acid (5-hydroxy-2-hydroxymethyl-pyrone acid) in the formulation, as it is a powerful inhibitor of melanin production, which is why it is also known for its "whitening" effect. It has the advantage of not staining the skin even if it is exposed to the sun and is not toxic to skin cells, as in the case of other depigmenting agents. Therefore, in addition to treating blemishes, it provides a more even skin tone and brightens the skin.

Numerous studies have demonstrated its depigmenting action after exposure to ultraviolet radiation, which would be equivalent to a sunscreen action (Mishima, Nair and Tramposch et al.) and its beneficial action against melasma (Mishima Y 1987, Nakayama H et al 1981 and 1982 and Minami K. 1982). It is also characterized by excellent tolerance, which has also been demonstrated in the various clinical trials carried out. Another component of BCN Melano is glycolic acid, the most frequently used ß-hydroxy acid (AHA). Thanks to its exfoliating action, it is used to reduce the stratum corneum barrier and increase the penetration of other topical agents, while stimulating skin regrowth and collagen. The result is much smoother skin and a more youthful appearance.

Another advantage of glycolic acid is the ability to deposit moisturizing agents within the surface of freshly exfoliated skin, reducing the appearance of lines, fine wrinkles and age spots, improving sun-damaged skin and thus becoming a totally synergistic agent with the other components of this formula. Vitamin C is a very effective antioxidant that neutralizes free radicals, inhibits melanin, stimulates the growth of the hydrolipidic film and increases collagen synthesis. Its topical use is vital for the healing of wounds and sunburns, as it also aids in the stabilization of collagen and the repair of elastic tissue. It is used for the prevention and treatment of photoaging, as well as the appearance of "broken blood vessels". Finally, citric acid is a tricarboxylic organic acid commonly used in cosmetics for its antimicrobial and antioxidant action, which contributes to the stability, efficacy and better appearance of the final product, as well as adding its antioxidant action to that of the other active ingredients.
