As a precursor of acetylcholine, a neuromediator that plays an important role in the skin, DMAE—or norcoline—has been used to produce a lifting effect on the skin, commonly known as a "lift". Keratinocytes, fibroblasts, myofibroblasts, sweat cells, and endothelial cells contain membrane receptors and respond to acetylcholine.

The firming effect of DMAE results in a cholinergic stimulus of membrane receptors on fibroblasts, stimulating a progressive concentration of myofilaments in their cytosol. Moreover, DMAE also exhibits antiradical and antifuscin effects, as it repairs the protein cross-linking (collagen and elastin) in the treated area.

Consequently, the action of DMAE brings about a synergistic combination of effects on different levels: cellular tension in non-muscular dermal cells, cohesion and migration of keratinocytes, hydration and elasticity of the stratum corneum, improved skin nutrition and defense, antioxidant benefits, and overall skin uniformity. It acts quickly and its effect is long-lasting.
